SITUATION OVERVIEW
Conflict erupted between the Hawazma and Kenana tribes in Abu Jubayhah town, following the armed robbery of a vehicle (tuk tuk) belonging to the Hawazma by members of the Kenana on 5 June. During the robbery, one of the Kenana tribesman was killed. On 6 June the conflict escalated and the fighting between the two tribes spread to Um Adarah, Farik Algoz, Al Dokhj, Awalad Khabosh, Al Gardod south and Helat Bargo neighbourhoods of Abu Jubayhah town. Homes were burned and people, mostly women and children, fled to areas west and south of Abu Jubayhah town with their belongings, taking refuge with friends, relatives and well-wishers. The fighting lasted for three days until the arrival of government security forces on 8 June. However, the situation remains tense. There are reports of 19 people reportedly killed and 54 others injured due to the fighting. On 8 June, local authorities imposed a curfew from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am the next morning.
On 7 June the Abu Jubayhah Humanitarian Emergency Response Team was formed to provide daily updates on the security and humanitarian situation and to identify the response required from government and humanitarian actors. The response team is made up of representatives from the government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), the Abu Jubayhah locality representative, the locality Health Department, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Department, the Abu Jubayhah medical doctor, the military hospital medical doctor, the Abu Jubayhah Youth Rehabilitation Group, the government’s Commission for Refugee (COR), representative of resistance committees, and humanitarian partners working in Abu Jubayhah.
On 10 June, HAC, the State Ministry of Health (SMoH), the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) and representatives of resistance committees and youth in Abu Jubayhah carried out an assessment mission to the affected neighbourhoods in Abu Jubayhah town. Findings indicate that about 18,300 people were affected by the conflict, of whom 15,150 people have been displaced, 3,096 people have been affected but not displaced, and 406 homes burned. The assessment team observed Unexploded Ordnances (UXOs) and recommend their immediate clearance and awareness-raising sessions on UXOs to local communities.
