The MIT Museum is preparing to transfer its enormous collection — and making a few surprising discoveries along the way.

By fine-tuning the spin density in some materials, researchers may be able to develop new quantum sensors or quantum simulations.

MIT engineers uncovered a way to create an energy supercapacitor by combining cement, carbon black, and water that could one day be used to power homes or electric vehicles. “The materials are available for everyone all over the place, all over the world,” explains Professor Franz-Josef Ulm. “Which means we don’t have the same restriction as with batteries.”

Professor Janet Conrad and Associate Professor Tracy Slatyer discuss their favorite physics discoveries. Slatyer notes that “the accelerating expansion of the universe has to be a strong contender.” For Conrad, “I think my favorite event in physics was the prediction of the existence of the neutrino [a subatomic particle with no charge and very little mass] because so much of our fundamental approach to physics today grew out of that moment.”
