SWISS has become the first passenger airline operator in the world to implement the energy-efficient AeroSHARK film technology in its commercial air services.
The Swiss carrier’s first Boeing 777-300ER with the new film, registration HB-JNH, performed the first service on Flight LX 64 between Zurich (ZRH) and Miami (MIA) on October 14. The AeroSHARK program is backed by the Swiss Confederation through special funding for environmental projects.
«Our adoption of AeroSHARK is an excellent example of how we can use innovative technologies to make air travel more sustainable,» says SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx.
«Our aircraft fleet is already one of the most advanced and carbon-efficient in Europe. Thanks to AeroSHARK, we can further enhance these credentials in a field where every saving counts. We are proud to be the first passenger airline in the world to adopt this new technology. And we will continue to constantly invest in such sustainable solutions,» added Vranckx.
AeroSHARK is a special film developed by Lufthansa Technik in collaboration with chemicals and coatings manufacturer BASF. This innovative technology was first implemented on Lufthansa Cargo’s Boeing 777F fleet.
The film has small 50-micrometer ribs that reduce aerodynamic drag during flight. SWISS and Lufthansa Technik have used sharkskin-inspired technology on the Swiss airline’s first aircraft a Boeing 777-300ER and have been testing the innovative «Sharkskin» for in-flight performance with external specialists in recent weeks.
All twelve of SWISS’ Boeing 777s will progressively be equipped with the new AeroSHARK film.
