Swiss has added a pre-order option for its buy-on-board dining service which was launched last year.
Economy passengers on short and medium-haul flights to or from Zurich or Geneva and over 50 minutes in duration, will be able to pre-order items from the Swiss Saveurs menu by visiting swiss.com/saveurs-preorder from April 20.
Customers will not pay for their orders until they are served to them inflight, and Swiss also said that pre-ordered items would be offered “at a discounted price”, although no further details were provided regarding this.
All freshly prepared products will be available via the pre-order service up to 36 hours before departure, including salads, bakery items, sandwiches, and the Beyond Meat Burger (offered on longer flights only).
The carrier’s chief commercial officer Tanur Goudarzi Pour said that “Reducing waste and avoiding having to unnecessarily dispose of unused food items have a vital place in our overall sustainability strategy”.
“In providing this new pre-ordering option, we aim to further enhance our ability to align the production of our freshly prepared inflight food items to customer demand, and thereby reduce the volumes of unused food products that we have to dispose of on board,” he added.
In addition Swiss is extending its trial of offering unsold food items at reduced prices on the last flights of the day on its European network, which ran on services from Geneva last year.
Swiss trials “surprise” bags of unsold inflight food at reduced prices
The Swiss Saveurs to Go initiative sees cabin crews on the last evening flights of the day back to Zurich and Geneva, offering passengers the opportunity to purchase unsold items after the regular inflight service has ended.
Availability is communicated via an inflight announcement, and passengers can purchase “surprise bags” containing one or two fresh food items “at a substantially reduced price”.
Fellow Lufthansa Group carrier Austrian Airlines launched a similar “Austrian Melangerie to go” initiative in February.
