Democratic campaign officials are “disproportionately white graduates of elite colleges,” NBC reported Wednesday.
According to data collected by Swarthmore College sociologist Daniel Laurison, nearly 70 percent of Democratic staffers—including 80 percent of communications staffers—are white, and more than 90 percent of Democratic political professionals have college degrees. Almost 40 percent of party staffers went to Ivy League universities and other elite schools.
By contrast, 61 percent of the general population is white, two-thirds didn’t go to college, and only 4 percent attended elite universities.
Laurison’s report comes as Democrats have embraced far-left rhetoric on “white privilege” and “systemic racism.” The Biden administration, for example, has pushed “diversity, equity, and inclusion” measures that view equality as inadequate to fight “systemic racism.”
If Democratic campaigns “looked more like the people they are trying to reach, they would be more effective in reaching those people,” Laurison said.
Democrats have been increasingly ineffective at reaching minority voters, however. A March Wall Street Journal poll found that Hispanic voters support Republicans over Democrats by 9 points, while black voters’ support for Democrats dropped 21 points since Nov. 2021.
