Lower seeds upset the higher ones in the quarter-finals at Abierto Tampico, this weeks WTA 250 event in Mexico, on Thursday, with Poland’s Magda Linette getting the better of top seed Elise Mertens from Belgium, Rebecca Marino ousting fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez, and China’s Zhu Lin beating Katerina Siniakova, while unseeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto from Italy battled past Colombian Camila Osorio.
Linette, the 5th seed here, won a tight first set against Mertens and ran away with the second to win, 7-5 6-2, after a 2 hour 11 minute contest, and will take on 8th-seeded Marino in the semi-finals on Friday.
31-year old Marino found an easier way past Fernandez, her 20-year old compatriot, 6-3 6-3, taking just an hour and 8 minutes to advance.
She won 72.4 per cent of her first-serve points and broke on 5 of her 10 chances, whilst firing all of her 4 aces in the second set.
Fernandez, the No 3 seed, had a tough night, winning just 50 per cent of her first-serve points, and produced only 2 aces in the match in which she managed to break only twice.
It was the first career match between the two Canadians, who will team up together next month for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow, Scotland.
Marino and Linette met last September in the quarter-finals of the Chennai tournament, where the Pole had the last word.
In the lower half of the draw, Zhu, the 6th seed, held out against Siniakova, winning 6-4 7-5 after an hour and 44 minutes, while Cocciaretto needed 3 hours 7 minutes to outlast Osorio, the 7th seed, 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2, in the last quarter-final of the day.
In the doubles quarter-finals Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi & Tereza Mihalikova from Slovakia, the No 1 seeds, defeated Russian Varvara Flink& You Xiaodi of China, 6-4 6-3; Americans Elizabeth Mandlik & Ashlyn Krueger beat Venezuela’s Andrea Gamiz & Eva Vedder from the Netherlands, the 3rd seeds, 5-7 6-4 [11-9]; Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok & Anna-Lena Friedsam from Germany, the No 4 seeds, defeated Mexican Renata Zarazua & Elvina Kalieva from the United States, 1-6 6-3 [14-12].
