Temporary judge seats would become permanent under US Senate-passed bill

The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill that would make all 10 temporary federal district court judgeships nationally permanent after the federal judiciary urged Congress to help it address workload demands in certain courts.

The Senate on a voice vote early Saturday approved a bill that would convert district court seats that Congress previously authorized for a limited time to permanent ones that would not eventually disappear should vacancies arise. The legislation now goes to the U.S. House, where a similar bill was introduced last month.

Among the courts with temporary judgeships are the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, a venue popular among patent litigants; the Central District of California; and the Southern District of Florida. Read more.

US Supreme Court to hear challenge to Biden’s ‘ghost guns’ curbs

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed today to decide the legality of a federal regulation aimed at reining in homemade “ghost guns” as President Joe Biden’s administration combats the increasing use of these largely untraceable weapons in crimes nationwide.

The justices took up the administration’s appeal of a lower court’s decision finding that the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives exceeded its authority in issuing the 2022 rule targeting parts and kits for ghost guns, which can be assembled at home in minutes.
