Surge in New Construction Boosts U.S. Housing Inventory
New construction of both single- and multi-family homes in the U.S. increased by 21.7% last month compared to April, according to the Census Bureau. The surge in construction, which was a 5.7% annual increase, should be a relief for both home buyers, who have struggled with low inventory amid high mortgage rates, and renters, who should see some relief from high prices, as new supply comes to the market. Permits to build increased 5.2% in May, and more than one-third of homes for sale this spring were estimated to be new construction. Yahoo Finance
Historic Movie Theater in Nottingham, England, to Be Converted Into Apartments
Plans to convert the historic Picture House building in Nottingham’s Long Row into nine one- and two-bedroom apartments are underway. Now a Grade II-listed building, the cinema opened in 1912 as a 670-seat theater with two cafes and a restaurant and later closed in 1930. A variety of businesses have since filled the building, with a betting shop currently occupying the ground floor, while the upper floors have remained empty for a decade. Renovations will begin this month, and the flats will be brought to market in January 2024. PropertyWire

Home Prices in Canada Increased in May
Canadian home prices increased 1.6% on a monthly basis in May, according to Teranet-National BankTM Composite House Price Index. After seasonal adjustments, home prices were up 0.6%, marking the first time in 11 months that the index reported an increase in home prices after adjusting for seasonal effects. The bump in prices is being attributed to a “a rebound in the resale market over the past four months,” as a housing supply shortage continues. Eight of the 11 cities in the index had price increases, with Toronto leading with a 1.6% jump in prices. BNN Bloomberg
