- With the last contested Presidential Election (PE) being in 2011, there will be a sizable number of first-time PE voters this year should there be a contest
- Most first-time PE voters whom TODAY spoke to have limited knowledge of or wish they know more about the President’s role
- They say that political apathy and the fact that the full extent of the President’s role is often not featured publicly makes it hard for them to grasp the significance of the PE
- Experts suggest ways to raise awareness among these voters, adding that it is important that they understand why the PE matters
- This is especially as first-time voters could play a significant role in the election outcome, as they form an estimated 15 per cent of the electorate
