Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner group leader, was reported dead in a plane crash in the Tver region north of Moscow – two months after leading a revolt against the Kremlin. Our Senior Foreign Correspondent, Roland Oliphant, tracks Prigozhin’s unlikely rise from criminality in the late Soviet Union to commanding a private army intent on seizing political power. His conclusion: the biggest surprise is that Prigozhin survived for so long.
