Newly Enacted Mansion Tax Paralyzes L.A.’s Luxury-Home Market
Leading up to April 1, the luxury real estate market in Los Angeles was frenzied, with sellers of multimillion-dollar homes desperate to close deals before Measure ULA, nicknamed the mansion tax, took effect. The new measure levies a 4% charge on all residential sales above $5 million and a 5.5% charge on sales above $10 million. Since April 1, the city’s luxury market has essentially frozen, with sellers removing their properties from the market. In March, 126 homes and condos sold for $5 million or more. In April, there were only two $5 million-plus sales. Los Angeles Times
