This is without a doubt a top club in Switzerland and it is over a century old. Basel FC has been around since 1893, and over that time they took the league cup 20 times, and they were Swiss Cup champions 13 times. As far as UEFA competitions go, they were really successful from 2010 to 2014, but after that their win rate started to fall off. In 2012-2013 they even played in UEFA’s semi-finals which was definitely the biggest triumph in the club’s history.
Another big player in the Swiss League is BSC Young Boys, and their team has also been around for over a century. The club is based in Bern, and so far they won 15 league titles and they are also 7-times Swiss Cup champions. They also had a decently successful participation in UEFA playoffs during 2010/2011, but other than that their win-loss ratio in UEFA wasn’t too impressive. In recent history, they were in UEFA playoffs multiple times:
2019/2020 – 2 draws
2017/2018 – 1 win/ 2 losses
2016/2017 – 3 losses
2010/2011 – 2 wins/ 1 loss
Titles-wise Grasshoppers are without a doubt the most successful Swiss team. They have 27 league titles and have won the Swiss Cup 19 times, which makes them current record holders/ The glub has been around for more than 130 years and much like its name suggests it is based in Zurich. As far as UEFA competitions go, the team made it to the quarterfinals in the 70s’, but other than that they don’t have any impressive feats.
FC Lugano has won the league 3 times, but that was back in the 30s and 40s, additionally, they also won the Swiss Cup 3 times. Lugano is more than 113 years old and throughout history, they even participated in UEFA group stages.
Also known as Espen, St. Gallen has been around since 1879, and it is Switzerland’s oldest club. Even as the oldest club they only won the league 2 times and unlike other teams we mentioned they don’t have notable success in Swiss Cup history. They did win the cup once in 1969, which is why they are in the top 5. Furthermore, there is no notable participation in the UEFA Cup as well, which is a shame given how long the team has existed.
