April has flown by and it has been another hard-working month for our courts across Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire Police and our criminal courts have been working to make sure that the public is protected and criminals serve their time.
In Hertfordshire, every month judges punish those who have wronged by putting them behind bars. This month, their crimes range from a man being convicted of raping a teenager to another man getting jailed for driving a stolen car the wrong way along railway tracks.

A man from Stevenage made a woman believe she was going to die as he raped her 35 years ago, a court heard. Martin Butler, of Stevenage, was jailed for 11-years after being convicted of rape and serious assault which occurred at his parents’ home in Mevagissey, Cornwall in late-1988, following a trial in February at Truro Crown Court.
Butler was sentenced on Friday, April 21 at Truro Crown Court after a social media campaign by two women, who said they were targeted by the Stevenage man. For the full story, click here.
A man from Cheshunt was jailed for four years after being convicted of raping a teenager in Stevenage. Emrah Demirci, 43, of Windmill Lane in Cheshunt, was previously convicted of one count of rape.
Demirci was convicted at St Albans Crown Court on Thursday, January 26. The court heard how Demirci had raped a woman – who was 18 at the time – in a hotel room in Stevenage in April 2019.
He was also sentenced with an indefinite restraining order against contacting the victim. For the full story, click here.
A man from Dagenham was jailed for ten years for driving a stolen car the wrong way along railway tracks in Cheshunt. Kieron Francis, 36, of Fossway, Dagenham, was sentenced to ten years in prison after formerly being found guilty of two charges of endangering life by driving the car onto the rail tracks and by abandoning it there.
He was jailed at St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday, April 5 after he already pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, two offences of criminal damage, unlawfully driving on the railway tracks and abandoning the vehicle.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 15, 2021 when the Herts Police control room were informed that a Land Rover had been stolen and had travelled into the Hertfordshire area from Essex. For the full story, click here.
