In fact, the recent purchase by Robert Millner was the biggest purchase of New Hope shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it’s clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$6.28). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
While New Hope insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn’t sell. The average buy price was around AU$3.56. It is certainly positive to see that insiders have invested their own money in the company. However, you should keep in mind that they bought when the share price was meaningfully below today’s levels. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. New Hope insiders own about AU$83m worth of shares. That equates to 1.6% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it’s enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
It’s certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of New Hope we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future.
