Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and lived to see her family grow and grow.
With Prince Philip she had four children, followed by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She leaves behind a sprawling family tree, with almost 170 years between the birth of her grandparents and youngest grandchild – here’s everything you need to know.
King George V: The first monarch from the House of Windsor, the Queen’s paternal grandfather was king from 1910 to 1936. Following a rocky start to his reign, King George gained significant public respect during World War One.
Mary of Teck: Before marrying George V, Queen Mary was first engaged to his older brother, Prince Albert Victor, but he died unexpectedly from flu at 28 years old. Her full name was Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes.
Claude Bowes-Lyon: The official title of the Queen’s maternal grandfather was Lord Glamis, 14th and 1st Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He enjoyed working on his large estates in England and Scotland.
Cecilia Bowes-Lyon: The Queen’s maternal grandmother was known for her love of family, and with Claude had 10 children. She had a heart attack at a granddaughter’s wedding and died eight weeks later, aged 75.
George VI: The Queen’s father never expected to become king. His older brother, King Edward VIII, gave up the throne within a year of his accession. He did so for love, as neither the Church of England nor British public supported his marriage of American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
Queen Elizabeth: The late Queen Mother was considered one of the most consistently popular members of the Royal Family. She died in 2002, aged 101, just a few weeks after her youngest daughter, Margaret Rose.
Princess Margaret Rose: The Queen’s younger sister was perhaps known for controversy above all else, as her glamorous lifestyle and various relationships brought unwanted attention to the Royal Family. A heavy smoker, she died in 2002 aged 71 after a lung operation, a case of pneumonia, and at least three strokes.
King Charles: A four-year-old Charles became heir to the throne of the United Kingdom when his mother was made Queen in 1952. He later became the first heir to earn a degree, receiving a 2:2 in anthropology, archaeology and history from the University of Cambridge.
Princess Anne: The Queen’s second child and only daughter is an avid equestrian. She won one gold and two silver medals at the European Eventing Championships, and became the first member of the Royal Family to take part in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
Prince Andrew: The Queen’s third-born served in the Navy and was given the honorary rank of vice-admiral in 2015. He was due to be promoted to admiral in 2020 but postponed the ceremony in the wake of his alleged involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Prince Edward: An unconventional path was followed by the Queen’s youngest child, who left his Royal Marines course in 1987 to pursue a career in entertainment. He formed the TV-production company Ardent Productions in 1993, but later dissolved it in 2009 when its assets were reduced to just £40.
Prince William: Now heir to the throne of the United Kingdom, William is one of the most publicly active members of the Royal Family. He joined the military after graduating from the University of St Andrews and served for seven years before marrying Kate Middleton in 2011.
Prince Harry: Always known as the wilder prince, Harry is most-known now for his relationship with Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the historic decision to give up their royal duties in January 2020.
Peter Phillips: Princess Anne’s son is the Queen’s oldest grandchild at 44-years-old. He became a businessman, working for companies including Jaguar and Williams.
Zara Tindall: Following in her mother, Princess Anne’s, footsteps, Mrs Tindall participated as a member of the British Equestrian team at the London 2012 Olympics, and won a silver medal in the team event.
Princess Beatrice: The oldest daughter of Prince Andrew, Beatrice doesn’t often partake in the royal lifestyle. She works for American software company Afiniti in New York City.
Princes Eugenie: Andrew’s younger daughter is well known for her work with charities Children in Crisis and Anti-Slavery International.
Lady Louise Windsor and James Mountbatten-Windsor, Viscount Severn are the Queen’s youngest grandchildren, the daughter and son of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex.
