Canadian Home Sales and Prices to Fall More Than Previously Predicted
TD Economics has updated its forecast for Canadian home sales, further downgrading its predictions for prices. With interest rates higher than many expected, the bank says the market will slow down even more. Back in June, TD had predicted that the Government of Canada five-year bond yield—which is a key influence on the five-year fixed-term mortgage rate—would peak at 3.75%, but they now expect it to peak at 4%, based on a September forecast. With high mortgage costs, home sales across the country are now expected to drop 10.7% this year, and average sale prices are forecasted to fall by 3%. Better Dwelling

U.K. Has Plenty of Undeveloped Land Despite Housing Shortage
Amid a housing crisis, it’s been revealed that just 8.7% of land in the U.K. is currently developed, according to real estate firm Searchland. Almost 11.9 million hectares remains unutilized, compared to the 1.1 million developed hectares. A large scale of the U.K.’s land is not permitted for development—commonly referred to as the green belt—including agricultural land, forest, open land, and water, outdoor recreation and residential gardens. “While the prospect of building on the green belt is such a contentious issue, if even a small proportion of this land was used to build more homes, the nation’s available housing stock could be boosted enormously,” said Mitchell Fasanya, co-founder and chief executive of Searchland. Sydney’s ‘Metro-fication’ Attracts Buyers to Suburbs
The increase in population and property value along Sydney’s Metro line is being called the “Metro-fication” of Sydney. The A$8.3 billion (US$11.7 billion) Northwest rail line, which opened in May 2019, has had a large impact on the surrounding property market, especially attracting young buyers, according to a new report from CBRE. Data from CBRE and PropTrack show that the suburbs along the Metro line have had a 49% increase in capital value over the last decade, outperforming surrounding suburbs by an average of 5%.
