In 2015 Ford released a special edition Mustang to celebrate the model’s 50th year on the market.
Everyone loves a good birthday party, but the team at Ford proved that they know how to make it a major occasion. When Henry Ford II, Lee Lacocca and Company introduced the first Mustang on April 14th, 1964, it became an instant success. They immediately portrayed it in several movies and media of the time, and there’s no doubt it’s remembered as an iconic car of historical importance. It was a game changer in the automotive industry, so much so that it actually became a new automotive category: pony cars.
There’s one thing all gearheads can agree on: the Ford Mustang's Legacy is indisputable. Despite the fact that more than five decades have passed since its creation, the automobile company has managed to keep up with what this mean whip brings to the table: the Mustang still holds the title of the most popular sports car of all time due to its different options for every price point and performance level. In 2014, aiming to pay tribute to the past, the blue oval team decided to unveil its 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Mustang at the New York Motor Show, recalling its original world launch at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. This limited edition will make any pony car enthusiast go insane: let’s have a closer look at what this wicked machine has to offer and what makes it so special.
This remarkable sports car comes with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. The GT fastback performance pack (which you can only get with the automatic version for any Mustang in 2015) and a powerful 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine that produced more than 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque promise not to let down any gearhead willing to get this limited edition.
Still not convinced? Then its 6-piston Brembo front brakes surrounded by 19-inch wheels with chromed Y-spoke design that pays tribute to the 1964 Ford Mustang will surely do the trick. Besides, this limited edition Mustang comes with Pirelli P-Zero summer tires: in 255/40-19 for the front and 275/40-19 for the rear.
This sports car’s body is defined by a silhouette with lots of muscle, which pretty much represents the quintessence of what a Mustang has to provide. Chrome accents were a real trend in the 1960s on almost every car, and this modern version brings back chromed highlights that can be found on the grille, side glass, and taillights.
If there wasn’t enough nostalgia so far, this limited edition also comes with rare window louvers. Unlike the louvers built in the past and contrasting with other anniversary editions, these are made out of a new layered glass material that add style and were designed to reduce glare, and keep the car’s interior cool. These limited edition units are the ones to have a faux gas cap on the rare side, where you’ll find the GT logo along with a “50 years” inscription beneath it. Now let's take a closer look at the inside of this Mustang.
As soon as you hop into this Mustang, you will find a custom interior in Wimbledon White and black leather. The two-tone theme is presented throughout all the cabin. This Mustang edition is the only one to get cashmere stitched aluminum panel, center armrest, leather wrapped steering wheel, and black and white leather seats. “50 years” and "50th Anniversary" logos can be spotted all around the interior: embossed on the comfy seats towards the headrest, on the dash as well as on the passenger side panel where a serialized 50 Year Limited Edition badge is engraved.
Only 1964 units of this commemorative model were built. Although the typical price for this sports car is listed around $30.7K according to KBB, the price can range from $38.2K up to $45 on Craiglist. This 50th Anniversary Mustang is only available in either White or Kona Blue (paying homage to the original two color code of the first 1964 Mustang). These two colors are exclusive of the anniversary edition.
In essence, the 50th Anniversary Mustang represents a perfect match between retro flair features and contemporary build. In other words, this whip will make you enjoy modern amenities more than any other sports car while taking you for a walk down Memory Lane.
