TikTok is opening its Effect House beta to all creators, designers, and developers around the world.
Launched in pre-release last fall, the online hub(Opens in a new window) equips users with tools and resources required to design and develop new augmented reality effects for the platform.
“Whether you’re teleporting into new worlds with Green Screen or freeze-framing with Time Warp Scan, creative effects empower creators to express themselves, entertain, and share stories through a wide array of engaging and immersive formats,” the company said in a Tuesday blog announcement(Opens in a new window).
To date, effects published by more than 450 artists like Laura Gouillon(Opens in a new window), Allan Gregorio(Opens in a new window), and Grace Choi(Opens in a new window) have been used in 1.5 billion TikTok videos and garnered 600 billion views.
Creators take note, though, in addition to regular community guidelines, AR effects must follow TikTok’s effect regulations. New effects must not promote colorism or negative stereotypes against protected groups, depict cosmetic surgery like lip fillers, or encourage scrutiny of someone’s appearance.
All submitted effects are reviewed by the platform’s Trust and Safety team. Any effects that violate the rules will be removed and the creator notified, while accepted effects will be released to the broader TikTok community. Creators’ usernames are linked to their published filters, which can be viewed from a designated tab on their profile page.
