With China’s 20th Party Congress coming up on 16 October, COVID-19 curbs are expected to be tightened in the country and thus, increasing risks of further disruptions to supply chains and businesses.
Economic activities in parts of the country last month were crimped by power rationing amid a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures hovering above 40 degrees Celsius.
China, the world’s second-biggest economy, posted a second straight month of contraction in its official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for August at 49.4 although the reading inched up from 49.0 in July.
Factory activities across northeast Asia also weakened in August on poor overseas demand amid slowing global economic growth.
