Here’s the Order of Play
(All times are local – GMT-5)
The women’s final is up first, with French No.1 Camille Serme taking on three-time champion in New York City, Nour El Sherbini, for the first PSA World Tour title of the new year. The pair have won the last four ‘ToC’ titles between them.
The two have met 22 times previously on the Tour before, with the ‘Warrior Princess’ holding the 14-8 advantage, including winning eight of their last nine meetings over the last two years. The pair are 1-1 at the Tournament of Champions, with Serme taking the win in the 2017 semi-final. Each of their last five battles have lasted longer than 50 minutes.
This has been one of the best week’s of Camille Serme’s career, as she has fought past Egyptian after Egyptian. After downing Rowan Elaraby and Yathreb Adel in the early rounds, she has then gotten the better of World No.1 Raneem El Welily and World No.3 Nouran Gohar in five-game battles over the last three nights.
It has been a completely different tournament for the three-time champion, however, with El Sherbini spending over 100 minutes less on court. She has dropped just two games across the event, beating Milou van der Heijden, Olivia Blatchford Clyne, Sarah-Jane Perry and Joelle King to reach a fourth final in New York City.
Will El Sherbini go on to claim a fourth Tournament of Champions crown, and edge her way back towards the World No.1 spot? Or can ‘La Panthere’ take a second title after her 2017 victory.
The last match of the week will see the Egyptian duo of Tarek Momen and Mohamed ElShorbagy battle it out for the men’s crown, with more than just the Tournament of Champions title on offer.
Like the women, the pair have met 22 times on the PSA World Tour prior to this, with ElShorbagy having won 17 of those, including 13 of the last 15 meetings since 2014. The pair have met once in New York City, six years ago, where ‘The Beast’ also got the better of Momen, winning 3-1 in the second round.
Momen has had to battle past three compatriots to reach the final at Grand Central, along with beating Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng in the third round. He downed Marwan ElShorbagy and Mostafa Asal en route to the semis, where he then beat World No.1 Ali Farag in a pulsating five-game battle.
On the other hand, ElShorbagy is yet to drop a game in the tournament, winning all four of his matches 3-0. Ryan Cuskelly, Gregoire Marche, Joel Makin and World No.4 Karim Abdel Gawad have all been blown away by the two-time ToC champion.
Can Momen get his first victory over ElShorbagy in a final since 2012, and continue his good form after winning the World Championships? Or can ElShorbagy take the victory that takes him back to World No.1?
