At Trump trial, prosecutors say gag order violations could mean fines, jail

Donald Trump became the first former U.S. president to stand trial on criminal charges on Monday in a case stemming from a 2016 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. As the trial kicked off, New York prosecutors asked a judge to fine Trump and remind him he could go to jail for violating a gag order about potential witnesses.

Jury selection will begin shortly, which may prove tricky in New York, a city with strong opinions. Justice Juan Merchan said about 500 potential jurors are waiting, with 96 on the first panel. The trial is expected to last through May. Here’s a look at what could happen if Trump, who has pleaded not guilty, is convicted.

Trump faces an array of legal troubles in criminal and civil cases while he seeks to regain the presidency. Trump denies wrongdoing in all of the cases. Some of those troubles will arrive before the U.S. Supreme Court in the coming weeks.
