U.K. Rents Fall for Third Consecutive Month
For the third consecutive month, rents in the U.K. have fallen. According to the latest HomeLet Rental Index, rents nationwide fell 0.6% month over month in January, after a 0.9% drop in December. London saw the biggest decline last month, with rents in the capital falling 2.2%. Australia Is Struggling to Build New Housing
Approvals, lending and building costs have created a formidable force against new home construction in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, new home approvals in the nation fell 9.5% in December to a little more than 13,000 properties. Although detached home approvals only dropped 0.5% in December, apartment and unit approvals sank 25.3%. The end result? Mainland Chinese Prefer to Rent Than Buy in Current Economy
A growing number of would-be home buyers in mainland China are looking at the state of the nation’s economy—and potential monthly mortgage payments—and making the decision to keep renting. The trend is already affecting China’s rental market, which has seen overall demand rise steadily. According to property think tank Beike Research Institute, China had 290 million tenants at the end of 2023, with the gross value of rent contracts reaching 2 trillion yuan (US$278.5 billion), and the organization expects leasing demand to increase in the coming year as more choose to rent, including a record number of university graduates who are expected to hit the housing market.
