U.S. seeks to stay abortion pill ruling while it appeals

The U.S. government on Monday filed an emergency motion to stay a federal judge’s ruling to revoke the FDA’s 23-year-old approval of the abortion pill mifepristone.

In a filing with the 5th Circuit in New Orleans, the DOJ said the judge’s ruling was “especially unwarranted” because it would thwart the FDA’s scientific judgment and severely harm women, especially those for whom mifepristone is a medical or practical necessity.

Earlier in the day, over 300 biotech and pharmaceutical industry executives, including Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, signed an open letter calling for reversal of the decision by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas.

J&J talc unit 2nd bankruptcy must be dismissed, cancer victims’ lawyers say

Lawyers representing cancer victims denounced Johnson & Johnson’s renewed effort to resolve talc lawsuits through an $8.9 billion bankruptcy settlement as a “fraudulent scheme” to get around a court ruling that it was not in sufficient “financial distress” to qualify for bankruptcy.
