Material Costs, a Labor Shortage and Severe Weather Send Construction Costs in Canada Rising
Canada’s residential construction price index has risen 51% since March 2020, the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Material costs, weather events and a labor shortage are the main culprits, according to the report from the Royal Bank of Canada. Prices for steel, concrete and other materials have climbed more than 50% over the last three-plus years, while development fees have climbed as much as 30% year over year in some parts of the country. Extreme weather events, factory shutdowns and the country’s labor shortage have only exacerbated the situation, limiting supply and driving up prices. BNNBloomberg
