U.S. News & World Report indefinitely postpones law and medical school rankings amid backlash

U.S. News & World Report has delayed the release of its law school and medical school rankings for a second time, without a new publication date. The unprecedented delays come amid a large-scale rankings boycott that began among elite law schools in November and spread to some medical schools. Read more about the delay.

Nearly a third of U.S. law schools this year declined to provide U.S. News with any internal data for its rankings, saying that the publication’s methodology hurt student diversity and affordability.

U.S. Senate panel seeks Supreme Court’s Roberts testimony on ethics

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin called on U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts to testify at a May 2 hearing on U.S. Supreme Court ethics reform after earlier urging him to investigate ties between Justice Clarence Thomas and a wealthy Republican donor. In inviting Roberts to testify, Durbin also said the chief justice could designate another justice to appear instead. Read more.

How Tesla ‘won’ a $3 million fine for race discrimination

A recent $3 million verdict against Tesla for race discrimination against an ex-employee was arguably a win for the company, writes columnist Hassan Kanu. Owen Diaz alleged that Tesla created a “plantation-mentality workplace” in Fremont, California, including the use of slurs. Diaz initially won a $137 million dollar judgment, but a second jury slashed the amount in a retrial. Kanu writes that Tesla preserved its interests largely by leveraging racial stereotypes and engaging in some problematic gamesmanship during the trial.
