CNA’s best current affairs and documentaries
When making a documentary, the last thing you want to hear is that an interviewee has changed his mind at the 11th hour. It happened to Insight producer Zainudin Afandi not once, but twice, when working on a story on Malaysia’s corruption crackdown.
We had arranged to film with several people who’d had encounters with graft. One well-heeled businessman would have regaled us with stories of the illicit practices he witnessed. But alas, he got cold feet when his family opposed his appearance in our episode.

Another – a former judge who presided over corruption cases – backed out close to the start of production. He decided not to dredge up old cases and smear the political party involved.
But such is to be expected when covering a topic as difficult and sensitive as corruption. In the end, other Malaysians shared their personal accounts of bribery and solicitation with us, putting the spotlight on a problem that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called “systemic”.
These stories come amidst a resurgent effort to tackle corruption by the PM, making good on his campaign promise to stamp out graft.
But when his dragnet ensnared some big names, like former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, the prime minister’s opponents accused him of political persecution.
Our episode explores the motivations behind the corruption crackdown, and what actions have been taken so far.
