Freelancer marketplace UpWork is looking for a new chief financial officer (CFO) to replace Jeff McCombs. McCombs has held the role since August 2020, when he replaced Brian Kinion. He will remain with the company through the end of the year to support the transition plan, said the company. UpWork and its board of directors will work with an external search firm to find a new CFO.
The departing CFO describes himself on LinkedIn as “a seasoned finance executive with over a decade of executive-level experience leading financial and business operations on a global scale.”
McCombs joined Upwork from Doctor On Demand, where he had served as CFO since 2018. Prior to that, he was CFO of OpenTable from 2016 to 2018 and CFO of Flipboard from 2014 to 2015. He was the head of global business operations at Facebook from 2010 to 2014. He holds a BA in economics and business from UCLA.
At the time of McCombs’ appointment, Hayden Brown, president and CEO of Upwork, commented: “Jeff brings significant experience that will help expand our financial and operational capabilities and add tremendous value to our business. His dynamic leadership approach makes him the ideal partner to help us execute on our strategic and financial plans.” Announcing McCombs’ departure, Brown said that “Jeff and I both agree that now is the right time for a transition.”
San Francisco-based UpWork describes itself as “the world’s largest work marketplace,” as measured by gross services volume. Globally, it competes with freelancer sites like Freelancer, Fiverr and Dribbble.
The company says it serves over 30% of the Fortune 100 and that its freelancers earned over $3.3 billion on the site in 2021 across more than 10,000 skills in such categories as website and app development, creative and design, customer support, consulting and finance and accounting.
