Vivo has provided several camera samples for the forthcoming X90 series. Typically, manufacturers wait until after announcing devices before revealing official camera samples, as is the case with the likes of Google and Xiaomi. Arguably, Vivo’s decision to do the inverse highlights the company’s intention to focus on camera capabilities again with its flagship smartphones, just as it did with the X80 Pro.
According to the company, the X90 series will launch with a primary camera that is 77% more light-sensitive than the ISOCELL GNV, a custom-made sensor that Vivo intended to use in the X80 Pro Plus. Unfortunately, Vivo never brought the X80 Pro Plus to market, as we discussed in September. For reference, the ISOCELL GNV has a 1/1.3-inch optical format and an f/1.57 aperture. In short, the ISOCELL GNV is comparatively large as smartphone camera sensors go. Additionally, the new and unnamed sensor is slated to operate at up to ISO 102,400.
Theoretically, this should allow a smartphone to shoot nightscapes without needing a tripod or a long exposure. Understandably, setting ISO to 102,400 reduces dynamic range and increases image noise, as Vivo’s sample image shows. Moreover, other samples demonstrate 0.6x to 3.5x magnification, as well as an AI algorithm that recognises 103 facial features, adjusts the background to maximise the foreground and applies intelligent beauty filters. Hence, it seems likely that the X90 series will debut a successor to the Vivo V1, the company’s dedicated image signal processor (ISP). Sadly, Vivo did not disclose when it plans to introduce the X90 series, nor how many models will be available.
