Moscow: Threats of an armed takeover in Russia suddenly disappeared on Saturday as Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin decided to cancel his “advance to Moscow” after reaching an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As a result, the Wagner fighters’ march on Moscow came to a halt and they headed back to their southern barracks. The Wagner Chief will also relocate to Belarus as part of the agreement.
According to reports, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the commander of the Wagner mercenary group, wished to avoid spilling Russian blood, thereby ending what may have been Russia’s first armed coup.
The New York Times claimed on Saturday that the Kremlin has announced the dismissal of the charges against the Wagner commander who had orchestrated an armed uprising against the country’s military authority.
Prior to this, Prigozhin said that his troops had come within 125 miles (200 km) of the city on Saturday.
But following Saturday night’s talks with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, he pulled back.
Later, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, declared that the criminal prosecution filed against Prigozhin for an armed insurrection will be dismissed.
According to Dmitri S. Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, Prigozhin will travel to Belarus, and the rebellious warriors who joined him won’t face legal consequences because of their “service at the front.” Due to their prior service to Russia, the more than 25,000 troops who participated in the “march for justice” would not be subject to any punishment.
Earlier on Saturday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared on state television and said that the uprising threatened Russia’s basic survival, albeit he omitted Prigozhin.
