The sisters, aged 14, 16 and 19, were just as honest about their affection for Jayden, as they were about the struggles and hurt sometimes of their situation.
Their maturity surprised Wen Lin. “They showed they weren’t going to shy away from challenges.” They also responded strongly to viewers who’d called it “unfair” to expect them to be a “back-up plan” for Jayden’s care.
A year ago, Wen Lin had told the heartwarming story of Andreana, who at 27 had willingly given up parts of her life to look after her autistic sister.
When it comes to children with special needs, “people usually assume that their siblings are ‘burdened’ with responsibilities and they talk of ‘sacrifice’”, Wen Lin noted.
“It’s not always about the sibling giving, but also the ways they receive from their special needs sibling. Although their realities look a bit different from other folks, they are taking it in stride.
“I hope it reminds people not to jump to conclusions – and to normalise a safe space for caregivers to share their stories.”
