No one wants to deal with losing a pet. But luckily, there is a device that can help locate lost pets and reunite them with their loved ones: microchips.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, a microchip is a device about the size of a grain of rice inserted underneath the animal’s skin between their shoulder blades using a hypodermic needle, much like giving them a shot. There is no anesthesia, and your animal will most likely barely feel the pinch.
A microchip contains an identification number that matches the owners’ contact information maintained in an information database. When the scanner is passed over a chip, it displays the identification number and where the owner can be located, as long as it is up to date. This device provides a reliable way of animal identification that is permanent and unalterable. While it is a reliable source, it should not be a substitute for the external identification of a pet. They should also wear colors with proper identification, including their name and a phone number to call if the animal is lost.
Low-power radio frequencies from scanners activate microchips. When scanned, the microchip has a unique programmed ID number making it easier to find an implanted microchip. Microchips are battery-free and sealed in a special glass covered by a sheath to try and prevent the microchip from moving around once it is implanted.
The Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter (YVAS) uses AKC Reunite Microchips, but other microchip companies use HomeAgain, AVID, and 24 Petwatch. The shelter can also help register microchips for those unsure if they were ever registered. YVAS also has walk-in microchip services available along with registration of the device. They also offer engraved ID tags made in the shelter, making it easier for pets to be identified should they ever get lost.
