Premier Inn has revealed what the latest hotel it wants to build in Cornwall would look like. Last week, the chain announced it was planning to open a multimillion-pound establishment offering 100 beds in St Ives.
The company wants to demolish Trewidden Care Home on Trewidden Road and replace it with a new £10m building. Parent company Whitbread said that, if approved, the hotel would create 30 permanent jobs and that guests would spend around £2.5m a year there.
The company said it would be built to a "high environmental standard", with contemporary styling alongside designs which "reference" St Ives' existing architecture. It would be clad with copper, for example, referencing the former mines at Wheal Trenwith.

Whitbread has released artist's impressions which show what the building look like – see the images above and below. The plans are being exhibited to locals on October 11 from 2pm-7.30pm at St Ives Leisure Centre, and October 12 from 10am-3pm at St Ives Library. There, local residents can ask questions and raise concerns to Whitbread.
A spokesperson for Whitbread said: "This Premier Inn hotel would provide an affordable destination for leisure and business travellers in St Ives throughout the year.
"We would be bringing a different style of accommodation to the town than is currently available and create permanent employment with the UK’s leading hotel business. As many of our guests go out to eat and drink locally when staying with us, the proposed hotel would also make a significant contribution to the local economy year-round."
“Like so many visitors to Cornwall, I have long enjoyed staying in St Ives. It’s a special place for me and so many others and we have taken a good deal of time to design a hotel that is fitting for the town and would bring many long-term benefits to St Ives.”
If the plans are approved, the 39 residents of Trewidden Care Home will be moved into a new 45-bed home in Penzance the company is hoping will be finished in October. Others might be moved to another Cornwallis-run home.
