Q&A With Beckie Strum, Managing Editor at Mansion Global

Beckie, how would you describe the current state of the luxury real estate market?
Expanding. Multimillion-dollar home sales are now completely normal in a new swath of smaller cities as well as once-obscure rural and coastal enclaves. We used to think of ultra-wealth funneling into the real estate of just a handful of major global financial capitals, but it has completely fanned out. 

What piece of advice would you give to sellers and buyers right now?
For a seller, it could be adding an EV charger, switching to a heat-pump or geothermal from gas, or adding fire-resistant landscaping or building materials, etc. For a buyer, it could be hunting for homes with such things or adding them. No matter your personal views on climate change or environmental sustainability, these issues will have a direct effect on housing trends faster than we might expect. 

Is there a market where you’re seeing growing strength?
There are so many hot spots for luxury real estate right now, it’s hard to choose. You have places like Austin or Salt Lake City that are already extremely expensive, but still growing. Then there are cities where the luxury real estate segment is doing surprisingly well, and that might be a product of homes being significantly less expensive, and they include St. Louis, Missouri; Portland, Maine; and even greater Detroit. These are certainly attracting a lower-priced luxury buyer.

Wendi McLendon-Covey, the comedic actress you know from “Bridesmaids,” “The Goldbergs” and “Reno 911,” has turned her attention to home interiors as host of “Frozen in Design,” an “anti-remodel” show now airing on Max and discovery+. We caught up with her to discuss her own eclectic design, and find five items for sale on the Boutique now that she’d approve for her home, a place where being happy and amused are two top design tenets.
