There’s a lot happening in Perth this week so make the most of it before winter hits. Work your way through nights of comedy, theatre, and the return of State Makers Festival.
The inaugural Muster at Claremont Showground promises to be an eye-opening, adrenaline-charged spectacle for both newcomers to the sport and long-time rodeo lovers. Over 150 competitors will compete in qualifying events over the course of the day, battling it out toward a final heat taking place as the sun sets. While the cowboys and girls in the ring will be the main event, there’s plenty happening on the peripheries, too. On the main stage, you can catch sets by some of country music’s biggest names. Lee Kernaghan and Kasey Chambers lead a stellar lineup of contemporary Australian country music, including Aria-award winner Casey Barnes, Amy Sheppard, and Melbourne stars Kingswood. Elsewhere, try your hand at rodeo on the mechanical bucking bulls. Kids — and big kids — can get their thrills on the carnival rides and end the day with a fireworks display.
Tickets for The Muster on May 13th are now on sale at www.themuster.com.au. Buy singularly or in multiples for you and your friends.
Let’s start the week with a little bit of arts and culture. The Bleeding Tree is a gripping revenge thriller produced by two of WA’s best theatre companies, Black Swan and The Blue Room Theatre. We could tell you what it’s above but a picture paints a thousand words and a short YouTube trailer paints about a million. Watch the above trailer, book your tickets and enjoy a night a Studio Underground watching a thriller that’s won almost every award for which it’s been nominated.
Where: Studio Underground
When: April 29 to May 14.
After starting the week on a serious note, absorbing Perth’s theatre, continue your week on the lighter side with a night of comedy. The Regal Theatre will play host to the Perth Comedy Festival Gala, Perth’s biggest night in the comedic calendar.
Message the group chat and assemble the crew because comedy is best shared with friends. After the show, continue the evening at one of Subiaco’s many restaurants or wine bars. May we suggest City Cellar or Shui?
Where: The Regal Theatre
When: May 10th and 17th
It seems like it’s going to be a week for the arts with one of the world’s most respected film competitions showcasing the best short films and documentaries about mountain culture, sports, and the environment.
The festival is travelling across Australia, coming to Perth from May 10th to 13th. Limited tickets are still available and are available through the State Theatre Centre of WA.
Where: State Theatre Centre of WA, Heath Ledger Theatre
When: May 10th to 13th
The best food; the best wine; the best venue?
State Makers Festival returns for 2023, bringing a ten-day celebration of food, wine, and the arts to the State Buildings. With 10 events still to choose from (three have sold out), there’s almost no good excuse to stay at home for the next week. So, which of the events are we most looking forward to?
Simply Reds — Emma Farrelly, one of the most respected sommeliers in the wine world will be taking you through a tasting of six fabulous red wines blended with live music in the background.
Battaglia — The battle of North versus South. Join some of Margaret River’s best winemakers and POST’s executive chef and devour your way through Italian cuisine with matched wine.
Where: State Buildings
When: May 11th to 21st
Some weeks, it’s all about food events. Others, it’s all community events and fundraisers. This week, it’s obviously about Perth’s arts and culture scene, showing why Perth is a solid contender for the best cultural city in Australia. We’re coming for you, Melbourne.
This Friday, Abbie Chatfield will be gracing the Perth comedy stage with her new comedy show ‘The Trauma Dump Tour.’ Get ready for another night of laughs as she pulls out the best of her witty observations and side-splitting humour for one night only.
Where: Perth Concert Hall
If Abbie Chatfield’s comedy isn’t your cup of tea; then maybe this event is for you.
The Lion King. Gladiator. Pirates of the Caribbean. Yes, they’re all movies, but they also have something else in common. The music for all these classics was composed by Hans Zimmer.
As part of the Candlelight Concert series, Wesley Church in the Perth CBD will be transformed into a concert hall. Listen to some of Hans Zimmer’s most famous tracks under the glow of candlelight. There’s a 6:30 pm or an 8:30 pm concert so the only question is, are you booking dinner before or after? Our recommendation is to book a table at Ascua which is approximately 100 metres away. It’s a Spanish grill serving up some of the best food we’ve tasted and will cap off the perfect evening.
As you likely already know, Mother’s Day is this weekend. If you’re looking for something a little different to do this weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day, Autumn Festival needs your consideration.
If you haven’t been to Araluen Botanic Park before, it’s one of the prettiest places in the Perth Hills, especially during autumn. Add to the picturesque park, a weekend full of events and activities all hosted within the park, and you have the perfect day out.
On Saturday, there’ll be train rides for the kids, mini golf, and live music on the Roundhouse Lawn. On Sunday, the activities continue with painting workshops by Cabernet and Canvas, a local jazz band, face painting, mini golf, and more.
Where: Araluen Botanic Park
When: May 13th and 14th
