One of Australia’s annual public holidays, Anzac Day, is fast approaching. On Tuesday 25 April 2023, services will be held across the country to commemorate the sacrifices of Australia and New Zealand’s Armed Forces, both past and present. Observed for over 100 years, the day is now one of the most important in Australia’s history.
Whether you’re planning to attend a Dawn Service or exercising remembrance differently, it’s important to remember that certain public venues will be closed.
So, what’s open on Anzac Day in Australia in 2023? Let’s take a look.
The answer to this will depend largely on which state or territory you live in.
Many grocery stores around the nation be open on Anzac Day but with reduced operating hours. Many Coles and Woolworths locations will be opening later in the day (typically around 12 or 1pm) to honour the Dawn Services that take place around the country. You can use the store locator for both Coles and Woolworths to see if the shops near you will be open on Anzac Day.
Similarly, major retailers like Big W, Kmart and Liquorland will be operating on reduced trading hours (if they are open at all). Read more via 9News to see what will be open near you.
Many café chains, such as Starbucks and Gloria Jean’s, will be open on Anzac Day; however, certain locations may have reduced trading hours. Be sure to use the store locator for both Starbucks and Gloria Jean’s to see what the hours of operation will be at cafés near you.
Independently owned cafés may be closed entirely. If you’re hoping to head to your favourite local café, it’s best to call ahead or check their social media accounts to see if they will be open.
Many pubs and restaurants will be open on Anzac Day, so you can grab a group of friends and enjoy a feed together.
However, it’s crucial to note that there are certain restrictions on the sale of alcohol on Anzac Day. Alcohol sales are generally prohibited until 10am. Every state and territory handles this slightly differently. In Queensland, this means that the cut-off for alcohol service stops at midnight, while it is 3am in Victoria.
In many places, any alcohol served from 10am until 12pm or 1pm (depending on the state or territory) must be served with a meal.
