Two women painters get their due
Sofonisba Anguissola, a Renaissance painter, and Louise Moillon, a still-life artist, navigated complex social hierarchies to achieve a level of acclaim rarely available to their female peers.
Two new Getty publications shed light on their lives and work

A fishbowl? A chandelier.
How do you design a chandelier fit for King Louis XVIII? Add live goldfish “whose continuous movement will give agreeable recreation to the eye.”
And don’t stop there

Evaluating risk
Is it too bright? Too dry? Too cold? Art objects can be sensitive.
150-year-old photographs doubly so

Women in a “house of yes”
During a recent panel discussion at the Getty Center, journalist Jori Finkel asked artist Catherine Opie what advice she’d give her 20-year-old self. “Say yes,” was Opie’s answer. The comment reflected a theme that wound its way through the first talk in the new series Getty Global Talks Presented with Christie’s—that women leaders say yes to responsibility and rewards, and also to sacrifice, discrimination, and constant comparison to their male counterparts.
First Getty Global Talks Presented with Christie’s offered inspiration and resources for women in the arts

When a window frames a view just so…
From Get Inspired subscriber Gillian Chessé:
“We’d spent the day hiking 12 miles in southern Patagonia, way up in the Chaltén region. When we arrived at the outpost we were exhausted and exhilarated to be in that glorious place. We went upstairs to our hike-in only hut and looked out our window to see this splendor. A glacier and her turquoise lake.”
Have a window-framed scene “hanging” on your wall? Did you snap one somewhere else? Send us the photo! Include your name, camera used, location, and anything else you’d like to share. stories@getty.edu
