The couple usually split their time between Clarence House, Highgrove House and Llwynywermod
Following the Queen‘s death and the ensuing reign of King Charles, questions have surfaced regarding where he and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will live.
As the former Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the royal couple resided at Clarence House in London, splitting their time between their other homes such as Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, and Llwynywermod in Wales.
Traditionally, Buckingham Palace has been the official home of British monarchs since 1837. Located in the City of Westminster, the residence boasts 775 rooms, including 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms.
In addition to benefitting from a Post Office, cinema, swimming pool, doctor’s surgery, and jeweller’s workshop, it’s home to the largest private garden in London, with a tennis court, lake, and helicopter pad.
The palace, where the royal family travelled to on Tuesday evening to receive the Queen’s coffin, is currently undergoing 10 years worth of renovations, with changes expected to make it safer.
New additions include a lift installation and repair work on aged electrical wiring, water pipes and boilers.
Just days ago, King Charles and Camilla hosted their first audiences in the palace’s 1844 Room.
There’s a range of palaces for the The King to choose from, including Buckingham Palace and Sandringham in Norfolk, the latter of which was used by the Queen during winter months and at Christmas.
Windsor Castle, where Her Majesty often spent weekends, Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s official Scottish residence, Balmoral, where she died, and Hillsborough Castle in Northern Island are also options.
It is believed the King will choose Buckingham Palace as his main official residence, but will likely remain in Clarence House until it’s fully refurbished.
According to The Times: ‘The King would like to keep Clarence House as his London home. He would use Buckingham Palace for banquets, receptions and investitures, and as the headquarters of the monarchy.’
Prince William, however, who has acquired the King’s former title, Duke of Cornwall, will be given the Duchy estate, including the Highgrove residence.
While King Charles also stayed at Welsh home Llwynywermod, it also belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall, so will now belong to Prince William too, who recently moved to Windsor with Kate Middleton and their three children.
It’s been a royal residence for the last 170 years and was the official home of King Charles (formerly the Prince of Wales) until the Queen died.
Clarence house, located a stone’s throw away from Buckingham Palace, was built in 1820. It features five bedrooms, a drawing room with a central fireplace, a morning room with personal photographs, artworks and antiques, and additional principle rooms.
The principle rooms have hosted receptions and other entertainment over the years.
Clarence house was refurbished and redecorated, with improvements including a new colour scheme, renovated textiles, and myriad new pieces from the Royal Collection and King Charles’ own art collection.
Owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, this Gloucestershire residence was once the home of Charles and Camilla when they went by the title of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.
The King bought the property, and its gardens and neighbouring farmland (referred to as the Duchy Home Farm), in 1980.
Modern features include energy-saving bulbs, solar lights, Biomass boilers, and a specific reed bed sewage system used for all of Highgrove’s waste. The outdoors occupies rare trees, plants and heritage seeds
The royal couple’s Welsh home, in the small village of Myddfai in Carmarthenshire, features three cottages, a Grade II-listed barn and separate main house.
Bought in 2007 for £1.2 million, the property, originally built as a model form, was renovated by Craig Hamilton.
He adhered to the now King’s sustainable ethos, so the house has been made using existing and locally sourced materials, such as Welsh slate and lime plaster. There’s also rainwater storage, and heating and hot water is accessed via a wood chip boiler.
The interior features include a main reception room with high ceilings and exposed wooden beams, three bedrooms with cream walls and tiles. Designer Annabel Elliot used mostly local furniture, textiles and objects.
Outside lies 192 acres of countryside with six English field maples. They were used as the avenue of trees at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding, and were later replanted at Llwynywermod.
As of March 2020, the Queen’s main residence was the 950-year-old Windsor Castle in Berkshire. Before the pandemic she and Prince Philip retreated to the Windsor residence, and she stayed there until the duke passed away in April 2021.
Though Windsor was the Queen’s main family home until she died, she was at Balmoral Castle in Scotland when she passed away in September 2022.
Many royal family members live close by to Windsor, and Prince William and Middleton moved into nearby Adelaide Cottage shortly before the Queen died.
In addition, Sandringham Estate in Norfolk typically hosts royal family Christmases.
Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse was her official residence in Scotland, but the royal family spent summers at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.
Hillsborough Castle, which resides in County Down, was her official residence in Northern Ireland.
Furthermore, the Crown Estate own numerous properties, including London’s Kensington Palace, Clarence House and St James’s Palace.
As a child, the Queen lived in myriad homes, including Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. After marrying Prince Philip Clarence House in London was one of their marital homes, as was Valletta on the island of Malta.
