The role of a sustainability manager is among the top five jobs on the rise in Singapore. According to the 2022 LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise list, the most common skills needed for this role are sustainability reporting, sustainability consulting, and CSR. The most common industries seeking out this role are management consulting, maritime, and IT and services.
The demand for this role is in line with one of the trends that LinkedIn has observed, which is climate action taking a front seat in business agendas. Governments and organisations are now coming under increased scrutiny to set ESG goals and adopt sustainable practices.
This also comes as more than 70 brands recently called for a global pact to address plastic pollution. FMCG brands including The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever, Beiersdorf, IKEA, P&G, Nestle, Starbucks, Pepsico, and L’Oreal signed a joint statement for a legally binding UN treaty on this issue. “We are at a critical point in time to establish an ambitious UN treaty that fosters collaboration for systemic solutions and speeds up the transition to a circular economy globally,” the statement said.
The statement was signed ahead of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2), which will see national governments gathering next month and allowing the international community an opportunity to take substantial decisions on plastic pollution.
Another job on the rise in Singapore is machine learning engineer. According to LinkedIn, machine learning engineers develop and implement self-running AI algorithms and systems for products and applications. Among the more common skills include deep learning, TensorFlow, and natural language processing. Some of the most common industries on the hunt for this role include Internet, IT and services, and banking.
Likewise, back end developers are also highly sought after today, especially in the Internet, IT and services, and financial services sectors. Some of the most common skills include Go, Python, and Docker products.
LinkedIn explained that businesses are looking to do more with their data to further automate repetitive processes and offer personalised experiences to customers. At the same time, the pandemic spurred businesses in the city-state to increase or maintain the use of digital tools and integrate the use of digital financial services to support business activities. Hence, companies will be on the lookout for back end developers to build up and maintain their online presence in a fast-evolving digital economy.
Rounding off the top five jobs on the rise in Singapore are healthcare assistant and talent acquisition specialist. LinkedIn’s research showed that almost 68% of Singaporeans are considering changing jobs this year. This level of interest in making a career move is significantly higher compared to the 10% of Singaporeans who actually changed jobs within a similar role or sector, in the previous two years since March 2020, LinkedIn said. During those two years, many Singaporeans may have been sheltering in jobs as a result of an uncertain economic climate.
At the same time, Singaporeans seem to be fairly optimistic about changing careers, with 54% of Singaporeans saying that they feel confident making a successful career switch this year.
The top five factors that will convince individuals to stay with their current employers include a salary increase (54%), improved work-life balance (42%), greater flexibility in where they work (39%), opportunities to develop skills (39%), and opportunities to progress in their careers (39%).
