Aug 15, 2013 — FBI officials this week released their latest timeline of the activities of Israel Keyes, the serial killer who spent part of his time in the North Country and Vermont.
Keyes committed suicide in his jail cell in Alaska last December 1. His death has left investigators scrambling to identify Keyes’ victims and the locations of their bodies.
Keyes suicide turned what had been a horror into a mystery.
While in custody, Keyes hinted to investigators that he kidnapped and murdered as many as 11 people, and robbed three banks – including one in Tupper Lake – to finance his killing spree.
But he was coy about his activities and died before the FBI could uncover details.
Now Federal investigators are releasing a more detailed timeline of his apparent activities, along with more information about the kinds of cars he drove.
[image2]“[M]uch of what he said only hinted at the things he had done,” said special agent Jolene Goeden in a statement. “So we are trying to get information out there about what he did tell us.”
According to the latest timeline, Keyes admitted to killing someone on the east coast and told investigators that he buried the body somewhere in Upstate New York in April 2009.
During that same trip, he robbed the bank in Tupper Lake. Authorities have confirmed that they’re confident that the victim’s body is not buried in Constable, in Franklin County, where Keyes owned land.
Keyes told investigators that he did spend several hours at a campground near Tupper Lake on that trip, though it’s unclear which one.
That’s frightening because one of his methods was to abduct victims from remote areas, including parks and campgrounds.
Two years later, Keyes returned to the east coast and murdered Bill and Lorraine Currier in Essex, Vermont.
The serial killer was finally captured in Texas in March of last year.
Following his suicide, the FBI has been trying to puzzle out exactly how many people he killed during his travels, who his victims were, and where the remains are hidden.
In releasing this latest information, they’rehhoping for help from the public. Anyone with ideas or memories here in the North Country or Vermont can call 1-800-CALL FBI.
