South Korea are competing at the 2022 World Cup this winter but they will be known as a different name throughout the tournament.
As the former semi-finalists star in Qatar, they will be recognised as Korea Republic and this has always been the case.
South Korea’s official name is the Republic of Korea and Korea Republic is therefore a shortened version of that.
The name was originated following World War Two after the whole of Korea gained its independence from Japan.
Therefore both South Korea and North Korea, who claim to rule the whole country, only have their names due to geographical reasons.
The South Korean government remains in charge of the country as a whole and despite the ongoing conflict between the north and south, they do not see themselves as separate. 
This means that until the conflict is concluded, the country will be known as Korea Republic whenever they are represented in a competition.
So this winter, they will be at the World Cup, recognised as Korea Republic, as part of a tough Group H alongside Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay.
Heung-Min Son and co will be out in Qatar to try and replicate their country’s heroics of 20 years ago.
