Finding an Audience: Nineteenth-Century Drawings
A new exhibition at the Getty Center features nearly 40 drawings by Edgar Degas, Gustav Klimt, JMW Turner, and other celebrated artists. Some works were intended to impress at an exhibition or to be cherished by collectors, while others were treasures given to friends or family members. “Today’s audiences will no doubt be dazzled by them and intrigued by their stories,” says Julian Brooks, senior curator of drawings at the Getty Museum.

He’s not mad, he’s just important
Visit the Getty Villa Museum and you’ll see many fine examples of “portrait busts”—what esteemed or wealthy ancient Roman emperors, politicians, and other members of the elite often commissioned so they’d be remembered after death. But why do these privileged people look so grumpy? Jessie finds out in this latest episode of Becoming Artsy.
What are portrait busts, and why do they look like that?

Walking the streets of turn-of-the-century Paris
The entrance to a bar. A door knocker held in a lion’s mouth. Mannequins in shop windows. These are just some of the everyday details captured by French photographer Eugène Atget in his obsessive documentation of Paris and its environs. Here are 10 photographs by Atget that caught the eye of curator Antares Wells as she readied them for our Atget exhibition.
