The World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 showcasing the best photo stories from the 65th annual World Press Photo Contest is under way at the Drik Gallery in the capital.
The contest, organised by World Press Photo Foundation, covered six world regions, namely Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America and Southeast Asia and Oceania.
Earlier this year, Drik Picture Library was selected by WPPF as the Asia partner.
World Press Photo Exhibition 2022, on its worldwide tour, recognises and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the past year from around the world.
The exhibition was inaugurated at Drik on Friday. Executive director of World Press Photo Foundation Joumana El Zein Khoury, ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bangladesh Anne van Leeuwen, photographer and former World Press Photo jury Abir Abdullah and managing director of Drik Picture Library Shahidul Alam, among others, were present at the inaugural ceremony.
The eighteen-day exhibition is showcasing photo stories, comprising 122 photographs, of 24 photographers from 23 countries, namely Bangladesh, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, Russia, Sudan, and Thailand.
The photo stories highlight diverse issues, namely the effects of the climate crisis, civil rights movements, access to education and preserving practices of national minority communities.
The displayed photographs have been selected– from 64,823 entries by 4,066 photographers from 130 countries– by a global jury board composed of seven members including Bangladeshi Tanzim Wahab, festival director of Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography. He was also the chair for the regional jury of Asia.
From the 24 regional winners in each of the four categories of WPP’s contest model, the 2022 Contest jury selected the four global winners.
USA-based photographer Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School was awarded World Press Photo of the year.
Kamloops Residential School depicts the tragic story of children belonging to national minority communities in the residential school run by the Christian churches of Canada, with the financial support of the government in Canada.
Australian Matthew Abbott’s Saving Forests with Fire won the World Press Photo Story of the year. The work depicts the traditional techniques of Mamadawerre community in Australia. They burn the grass to protect late-season wildfires in Mamadawerre, Arnhem Land, Australia.
Brazilian Lalo de Almeida’s Amazonian Dystopia won WPP Long-Term Project Award. The series depicts the multilayered effects of the destruction of land, and pillage of natural resources, as experienced by Brazilian communities.
Ecuadorian Isadora Romero’s Blood is a Seed won the WPP Open Format Award. He questions the disappearance of seeds, forced migration, racism, colonisation, and the subsequent loss of ancestral knowledge.
The World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 began its worldwide tour in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on April 15. It has been held in more than 20 countries so far.
The exhibition will remain open at Drik Gallery till November 21.
