Despite retiring two years ago, WTA icon Caroline Wozniacki returned to play one final farewell match against good friend Angelique Kerber and was roared on by a capacity Danish crowd.
Whilst 2018 Australian Open champion Wozniacki announced her retirement from tennis two years ago after she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, the Dane returned for a friendly match earlier this week against close friend and three-time Grand Slam ace Kerber.
The original farewell match was set to take place in May 2020 and was set to be pit Wozniacki against 23-time Grand Slam legend Serena Williams as she promised to play one final time in front of her home fans at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen..
However, the match had to be rescheduled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and Serena’s injury meant Kerber stepped in as a fitting replacement.
As well as her supporters, Wozniacki’s family and friends were also in attendance to see the Dane say one final goodbye to the sport.
In fitting fashion, Wozniacki emerged the victor by winning 7-5, 6-4 and was roared on by what looked like a near-capacity (16,000) crowd.
Wozniacki and Kerber faced each other a total of 15 times and were evenly matched throughout their careers, with their head-to-head record standing at eight wins to Kerber whilst Wozniacki had won seven of their encounters.
Whilst uncompetitive and unofficial, Wozniacki finally levelled the record at eight wins apiece.
Wozniacki enjoyed a storied and illustrious career, spending a total of 71 weeks (approximately one year and four months) as the World number one and claiming a total of 30 career titles.
