As Turkey prepares for presidential elections on May 14, we would like to highlight an opinion piece contributed by DW’s Bülent Mumay this February on the state of press freedom in the country.
The article has become even more relevant as Mumay has now been handed a suspended prison sentence in Turkey in an apparent attempt to silence the journalist. DW editor-in-chief Manuela Kasper-Claridge commented: “We as Deutsche Welle condemn the imposed prison sentence and will support Bülent Mumay with all legal means.”
Press freedom is at the heart of our work at DW and at the Global Media Forum. On May 3, International Press Freedom Day, we also announced the laureate of this year’s DW Freedom of Speech Award: Oscar Martinez. The investigative journalist from El Salvador has been relentlessly fighting for democracy and against corruption in Central America for many years.
Join us this June to celebrate a free press along with Oscar Martinez at the Freedom of Speech Award ceremony, which is another highlight of our first conference day.
